I was in a company for many years, and was both successful and happy there. Then we were taken over by a much more ruthless outfit, who cared much less about their employees and more about their bottom line. When they had their first losing quarter in over 10 years, 4000 of us hit the streets, including myself and several other managers who apparently were too concerned about our employee's wellbeing to insist on 80-hour weeks. Make sure you know what you're getting into. |

From my 20 years of experience...much of it looking for a better situation while currently employed...I've done my share of interviewing and examining various cultures.
Nothing is ideal and you'll never find the "perfect" job...there will always be a drawback.
What I suggest is to find the role and setting that mirrors your personality, character, future goals etc. Forget about money. I'm in a high paying job that I hate right now because of the environment.
I've found that most people know after being at a firm for 2 days whether they'll like the job, can even do it (surprise...they give you a 10 page job description on first day...not mentioned in interview), don't find anything that immediately and totally drives you nuts, and can get along with supervisor. Why not use a sick day or vacation day to "test" a new company. Tell them that its best for both parties.
