My previous employer did not, ever, acknowledge when I did a good job, not even when I cracked two tough problems that he himself created [and would not admit to it], plus no other technician in the company was able to solve (after each spending hours repeating the mistake). Instead, I got criticized for "wasting time". My solution took half an hour, solved the problem, and I documented it for future reference. His proposed solution would take four hours, which he would either call 'unbillable' or would injustly overbill the client. Anyone else with similar situations? |

I am a help desk person who is stuck has experienced somewhat similar problems. I got criticized for leaving my desk for more than 10-15 minutes at a time to try to mimic problems and solve them. Furthermore, I was not given any tools or training. I have to learn almost everything on my own. In a way, I like to learn on my own. But there are administrative tools I should have permission to have access to so that I could do more and enjoy a challenging position. My viewpoints are almost always discounted. The problem is that our tech support manager is smart, coniving and has worked his way to his position in a dishonest way. He is smart, but he's also an unsympathetic jerk who never recognizes all of the work I do for him and how I keep his technicians pacified and solve problems so that they can work on their projects. He lacks people skills big time and I think he's jealous because a lot of the users like to call me and ask me for help. There is help out there. But don't look to HR. They are there to back the managers and the company. I'd document everything and look at the website www.bullybusters.org. I soon realized that this person is a bully and I'm the target. I've not accepted it. But I do more now to help people and to smile on the tough days. They hate it because they hate their jobs and want us to dread their wrath....
