I have a full-grown beard (I am an orthodox Jew), and have been rejected by a prospective employer on the basis of "you are going to scare the customers, who will ask me if I sent a rabbi to pray or a technician to fix their systems". When I discussed securing my beard with pins, the interviewer said "no, because if one of them falls off, you are going to look like one of those Pakistanis [sic]". Another condition was to take my head-covering off. He did not even look at my resume.
Similarly, many other interviewers have asked me upfront if I am available on Saturdays [obviously I am not], and this provided them with a quick and legal "escape". |

Hard as it is to get a job in this day and age, noone should have to put up with those kind of comments. I was highly offended reading what was said to you and am female and a-religious. There is no excuse for ignorance of that extent in recruitment or management. I wouldn't want to work for or with people who make comments like that. Yeah, it might cost be a good job, but at least I'd respect myself and my employer. THAT is more important that facial hair, piercings, being bald or looking like a call girl. Honestly. What is this world coming to?
