In Reply To: I hate my job more than anything that i have ever been through.I'm in my thirties and since i started this job two and a half years ago,i've developed high blood presure and other stress related problems. My doctor has advised me to find another job. However, even though i hate my job, i do like and respect the people that i work for.In addition to this, four people have left since January(out of a total of ten employees). The owner is very temperamental and i dread informing him that i am leaving the company.I'll admit that i feel like a coward because of this. This hasn't slowed my job search, but i would like to know the most painless way to handle this when the time comes.
Message: Flight or fight is the basics of human instincts. Its called "self preservation". If you can afford it leave now. With the stress hanging over your head, you may not be interviewing well even if you've had several interviews. Taking control of your life will boost your self esteem. If you have email, send him your letter of resignation. Do it at 4:00 p.m. on a Friday night and have your office packed before you hit send. Then, calmly walk in and shake his hand. Tell him what you've learned from him and how much you appreciated your job. But, for personal reasons, you have to go. Be professional about it and offer to be available by phone for one week to assist your replacement. Because you are worried about his reaction, plan your escape ahead of time. Complete your projects, if things are still to be done, make a checklist and hand it to him to assist your replacement. Remember, this company will be on your resume and a new employer will more than likely call for a reference. How you handle your departure will tell your new employer a great deal about your character. An vow to never work for an insecure tryant again. Good luck.
