I will be starting work at a Big 5 in Northeast. Can anyone give me any tips on surviving a Big 5? |

It is a very competitive atmosphere in the Big 5 and the culture is more competitive internally than in any other setting within which you will engage. Make sure you document everything because they will lie, they will gossip and they will scape goat you in an effort to pass the buck (I am referring to anyone that does not want to be implicated in projects that go wrong (including the client and/or colleagues). Make sure that the correspondence from all sides is captured in an email with respect to your deliverables, expectations from your client, partner, Engagement Manager, performance manager etc. I know alot of people, myself included, that were burned because of conjecture. When you do a great job, make sure the people that tell you so right a "thank you" note to you and forward this on as part of your performance review; let them know this is why you would appreciate a written recommendation from the person who offers it.
Make sure to document any changes in project scope, schedules or expectations.
Big 5 wins alot of work because they promise the world to a client in the first place and someone like you has to deliver it. When matters become complex and slippages occur, as they often do, you have to demonstrate your professionalism throughout the history of a project.
Also, never confuse a colleague with a friend. Sorry if this comes across as cynical,You can get alot further if you CYA...
