In Reply To: We only get six paid sick days. Anymore than that and we have to take them unpaid or use up our vacation time. When one of the employees had to be admitted in the hospital last summer, the boss kept track of how many days he was out on the big calendar on our bulletin board. Needless to say, I have no respect for my boss.
Message: Hey jdnx, I feel your pain. My company just got acquired by a huge company and we were forced to go from unlimited sick days to 5 sick days. And as soon as that benefit conversion occured, wouldn't you know it, I got a bad concussion on a fall and was out (with doctors' notes) for about 4 days. I lost all my remaining vacation time, unbeknownst to me, and had to borrow vacation time in order to keep my holiday travel plans in place. It was either that or take them as unpaid days. I went to my manager, who luckily had to have surgery last year, and complained. I said to him "So when you had your surgery last year, under these rules, you would have lost a big chunk of vacation time and maybe wages. It's bad enough you're legitimately ill, but then you are penalized for it at work too?". He agreed and started peace talks with the HR department. In the end, anything less than 7 or 8 sick days is unrealistic, and better policies on short-term disability need to be in place.
