In Reply To: You can always choose to respond, in writing, to a review, whether it was positive or negative. Your response can be a rebuttal or simply a letter for the record commending your boss for helping you succeed. Remember your boss (unless he's the top man) is also getting reviewed and your support will help him.
Message: Reviews by nature either please people or displease people. Critiqueing your boss is not necessary. Primary concern during reviews needs to be the performance of the individual that is being reviewed. You would find the review more helpful if the information were thoughtfully considered and digested. If any item in the review is incorrect or based on assumptions that are not correct, the response area is a great place to document. Also, if there are items that were overlooked in the review that would cast a different light on your performance, document them. Awards, special projects and the like are sometimes overlooked. Lastly, reviews are based on the information and opinions of the person that is writing them. That person may not remember or see everything that you do. Your opinion is valuable. If you disagree with any point or want to clarify something, do so. The comments section is the location set aside to justify areas that fall short, or illustrate areas not mentioned that add to total performance.
