I love this quote. The late great ball player Satchel Paige said it. I think it suggests motivation and being the best you can be, no matter what the job.
On the other hand, I think it also refers to people who really love their jobs. If you love your job, it shouldn't feel like WORK at all. Maybe this sounds incredulous. However, I think that there are many people, like professional and successful athletes, and actors for example, who simply love what they do. Yes, the 7-figure income is a motivator, but I think that some of these people would do it for far less, because it's what they love.
On the other hand, you have folks like teachers, cops, and firemen, who make a FRACTION of what an athlete or actor makes; yet, I'd bet some of them would'nt trade places because they too, love what they do.
Although I do not love my job, I'm a very motivated person. I do what is asked and then some. Trust me, I don't get paid a king's ransome; I'm conscientious because that's my work ethic and bills must be paid. Right now, I can only dream about a career doing something that I love AND getting paid to do it. To me, that would ALMOST be like stealing! *smile* |

That quote only seems to apply to a certain type of individual. Hell, I would love it if someone would pay me $70k to go skiing every weekend or apply suntan lotion to supermodels or something. The reality, however, is that for the vast majority of us who work as white-collar slaves at MegaGigantaCorp, LLP, putting up with idiot managers, mind numbing projects, and endless beurocracy is a necessary evil we endure in order to pay our bills. It's like the old guidence counsellor question, "what would you do if you had $1 M dollars?" (the answer presumably being your ideal job). Two of the favorite responses I've heard:
From 'Clerks' (I think) - The question is bullshit. If everyone had $1 M, there wouldn't be any janitors or ditch diggers.
From 'Office Space' - I would do absolutely nothing.
I'm sorry, but I just can't understand my coworkers who are like "I would work here even if I didn't have to". Why the hell would anyone want to be what is essentially a high-priced temp for a Big-5 consulting firm if they didn't have to?
