In Reply To: I hate my job more than anything that i have ever been through.I'm in my thirties and since i started this job two and a half years ago,i've developed high blood presure and other stress related problems. My doctor has advised me to find another job. However, even though i hate my job, i do like and respect the people that i work for.In addition to this, four people have left since January(out of a total of ten employees). The owner is very temperamental and i dread informing him that i am leaving the company.I'll admit that i feel like a coward because of this. This hasn't slowed my job search, but i would like to know the most painless way to handle this when the time comes.
Message: I've found that those bridges aren't all that important. The jerky bosses of the world wouldn't give you helping hand after you leave even if you finished all their work for a year before going. That said, don't sink to anyone elses level. Your career is about reaching your own professional goals. Be they money, power, fame, learning...whatever. Go for your goals and don't let dopey bosses stand in your way. Toward that end, submit a transition plan along with your resignation. Stay long enough to carry out that transition and then move on. If it takes you a week, resign after a week. If it takes you a month, same thing. (Don't make it less than a week though. You need to give the coworkers you liked time to give you a going away happy hour and have a few lunches with key people.
