I am a Marketing Manager - overseeing a corporate marketing department for 500+ employee firm. My boss has no marketing education / experience; his 15+ years background is in a completely different area. The problem is that he always takes credit for my work and ideas to compensate for his lack of "know-how", and to look good in front of the board of directors / president. HR is unreceptive, what should I do? |

Are you kidding? Did you just land here from Neptune or something?
This happens everywhere all the time. Get used to it. Your manager is not obligated to give u credit for anything. Yes, a good manager always gives credit to his subordinates, but this type of manager is like walking along the beach and stumbling upon an intact conch shell, it's great when it happens, but should not be expected.
I'm also not of the opinion that if you do a good job then other people will eventually notice, this usually ends with you being layed off and the manager being kept because he/she did such a great job. Look for ways to market yourself to others and take credit for your work. Some of this needs to be done behind the managers back. NEVER outright say that the manager is stealing your work to another co-worker, (Remember coworkers are not your friends and should never be completely trusted)...but make damn sure that people know where the work came from...get the picture?
Otherwise your only option is to leave and take your portfolio with you, all you have to prove at a nother company is that you were responsible for the work. A smart company recognizes where the talent is really coming from...
Well I hope this helps, I was once as naive as you too.
