Message: I agree with the post from Lucifer. I probably would not wear my nose ring to an interview, but wear it at some point after I had begun working in a new office and see how it went over. My experience is that I got my nose pierced about 7 years ago and have worn it to work ever since. I work for a legal department in a gov't agency and my performance appraisals consistently compliment my professionalism. Of course, I had been working there for about six years at the point I got my nose pierced and had a really cool direct supervisor. Some people seemed to be taken aback by it at first (yes, I guess I am the different one, but that's o.k.), but anyone who has worked with me over time has gotten over it. The really funny thing about it is the times people don't notice it at all (I wear a very small ring). One attorney in my department noticed it one day and insisted that it was the first time she had seen me wear it - I went on to tell her that I had worn it every day for the year we had been working in the same dept. I have had this experience more than once. I think those who are telling the poster of the question to "grow up" need to take a step back and not be so harsh. Sure, there are compromises we have to make at work, but that dosen't mean nothing ever changes either. Remember that there was a time when the only women who wore makeup were prostitutes, now a professional woman not wearing makeup is looked upon as not caring about her appearance. The very fact that this question even arises shows that things have changed and that this attire is acceptable in some workplaces, because 10 years ago the question probably wouldn't have come up to begin with.
