In Reply To: I just started a new INTERHNSHIP and I've read the message boards and articles about the NECESSITY of "networking." But how does one actually do that? I've been meeting a lot of people outside of my department, but still within the same company. I want to get my name out, but what is the best way to do that? For instance, after I meet a new perons and get their respective business cards, would it be appropriate to email then and tell them "It was great to meet you. Can I contact in the future with career related questions?" Any ideas? Tips? Thanks in advance!
Message: Since you appear to be just starting out in your career, I wouldn't expect to have a global network of acquaitances within the year. Starting with people in the same company is a good start. Chances are, they know people in other companies because of their own years of experience. If you have a good network of acquaintances and friends within the company, and you needed a contact at another company, there's a good chance someone can provide the link. In due time, as you move from job to job, or as your network of contacts move on to other positions, the network will grow in breadth and depth. But stick to the basics as you are just starting out.
