I am a situation where my middle manager is a political coward and keeps himself clean by avoiding messy situations, blaming other people (junior people like me) whenever there are mistakes, and making other people look stupid by asking them to find out answers from others that he should know. He has recently blamed me for something that he did wrong! The managers of my group have no idea what is going on...they are so busy/clueless that they just take his word for things. If I let this slide, it will really end up on my reputation. If I confront him, it will probably still end up on my reputation because it's my word against his. What can I do? |

Put yourself in the shoes of whoever you plan to complain to. Confronting your boss will make him defensive and even vindictive (cf. some of the posts on this board about ex bosses ruining folks' reputations). Your best bet is to come off as a competent team player to everyone else, let them know you're skilled by dropping tidbits about your successes, experience, background and education(at one job I put my diplomas on the wall before my boss would stop second-guessing me)and hope the mgmt. knows your boss is an ass already. If you piss off a narcissist like your boss, you'll end up fired in a heartbeat.
