Don't underestimate the time involved in commuting from even the outer boroughs. The subways can be painfully slow at times. You want to live as close to work as possible because you will probably work 80 or more hours per week in i-banking. Bankers will think something is wrong with you if you don't live in Manhattan. You want to be perceived as a "player" - live in Manhattan. I would recommend sharing an apartment or getting a small studio until you can afford to upgrade. |

It took me six months to find, but I got a rent-stabilized small studio in Chelsea for $800 through an ad in the NY Times that the building management company placed (i.e., no fee). Outer boroughs are almost as expensive and can be a pain to get home to if you work late hours.
Share for awhile and look for your own place constantly -- finding a decent place here is like looking for a job.
