Don't underestimate the time involved in commuting from even the outer boroughs. The subways can be painfully slow at times. You want to live as close to work as possible because you will probably work 80 or more hours per week in i-banking. Bankers will think something is wrong with you if you don't live in Manhattan. You want to be perceived as a "player" - live in Manhattan. I would recommend sharing an apartment or getting a small studio until you can afford to upgrade.
