In Reply To: Hi Guys, Just thought we should start a discussion around "Power Dressing". Most of us might want to work for the most reputed banks/firms (maybe some of us already do)... and have the capabilities to succeed. However, what b-school sometimes misses out on - is how to dress for the workplace. So if any of you have specific tips on : a. What to wear. b. How To wear it. c. Where do bankers/consultants usually shop from? d. Must-Dos (or alternatively) Dressing-Disasters. I am sure the group will benifit.
Message: Are we talking male or female? The basics are the same for both: 1. Take the time to iron your clothes, or use a drycleaner. 2. Do not wear anything with holes (even small holes), stains, faded, or worn. 3. Polish your shoes - or pay someone to do it for you. 4. Grooming - keep your hair at a manageable length and use hair product - even if it is a small dollop of gel. Also, a 5 o'clock shadow isn't appreciated until 5 o'clock.. . p.m. 5. Wear a good-looking watch. It doesn't have to be expensive, just a nice-looking watch that goes with everything (i.e. an all-gold watch is a little flashy). 6. ALWAYS match your shoes and your belt - if you shoes are brown, wear a brown belt. If your shoes are cordovan, wear a cordovan belt. There are many shades of brown, so buy belts that match your shoes. My theory is that the perception of a "banker" is one that is polished and stylish. Therefore, french cuff shirts, cufflinks, pocket squares for your suits and a collection of good quality shirts should keep you at the top of the game. Keep the seasons in mind - don't wear a light-colored suit in the winter or a thick wool suit in the summer. Buy for quality, not quantity. There is a good middle-ground that can work for even the smallest of budgets. If you really want quality - have your shirts custom made. There is a shop in NYC called Addison on Maddison. They allow you to pick your fabric and will make the shirt to your liking. You can pick collar-style, cuff-style, and fabric for each. Their shirts run about $85 each. We stumbled upon the shop while on vacation and have been ordering shirts from them for 4 years.
