I can't believe they did that, and then just called you specifically about it. Your direct report was surely lying. If it was "purely organizational," then why wasn't their an internal announcement about who this would affect? In the world of consulting, which I can most accurately speak to, a Senior Manager is MUCH lower than a Managing Director. They would not even re-title you or down-level you like that. They would just can you.
Going from an MD to an SM though in any field would be bad. I would definitely look for another job. I'm sorry that happened. I think you deserved more from your employer on that one.
