I will be starting a new job in a few weeks that we allow me to work from home. As this is the first time I have a job that is structured like this, I would appreciate any infor or experiences of people that are currently doing this..thanks! |

Pros: great dress code, flexible, save on lunches, flexibility, privacy.
Cons: Tend to work to much, must self supervise, limited social interaction, don't overhear conversations that might help your job. Harder for your boss to asses your performance.
Advice: Most important. Communication is the key. I would recommend actually making a written communication plan for not only directly work related items, but make sure you contact and speek with all members of your team frequently. Put reminders and follow them. Short conversations are very helpful in getting informatio that may be meaningful to your duties, and your career. Develop relationships that don't just focus on work. Spending time to get to know your peers is very important.
Second. Schedule time out. I have gone 5 days without moving my car. You go crazy. Make plans for lunch with friends, get "out" more, you need that person to person interaction.
Third. Set up... If possible, have your work space separate from your living space and close the door, literally if you can at specified times. It is easy to start working as soon as the coffees ready and find yourself working way past dinner.
Fourth. Take advantage of the perks. When you don't have phone calls, but have work, play the radio low to have some background noise, as long as it can be easily turned off if the phone rings, etc.
I enjoy it, but it has challenges you have to experience and adjust too.
Good luck.
