Weekly Pot Luck |

A friend of mine is a junior person in a bank branch. Every week a combination of higher-ups/coworkers try to rally sales by expecting employees to bring in food for their co-workers (10+) people. This seems to me unfair, bordering on ridiculous. I've heard of pot lucks once or maybe twice a year (I don't work in banking), but every week? It seems like an unreasonable financial demand on employees and an unreasonable demand on their off-hours to do this every week. If one doesn't participate they look like they aren't a team player. The branch doesn't really have a manager and at least one of the other employees has changed customer's paperwork (falsified) to increase their own sales levels. These pot lucks are all about "team" and "sales" but I would think the company should be maybe buying people lunch if they want to reinforce teamwork every week. Why doesn't management buy a pizza once in a while? What can be done about this? Is it a big mistake to just say no, I won't participate? Any and all suggestions welcome. Thank you! |

Who's idea was this to obtain their meals on the backs of the employees? Sounds like a proverbial "free lunch"! It is quite obvious that your branch needs a Manager to manage it properly!. I would inform someone (anonomously if necessary)at head office that things are out of control at your branch. Just like you said once or twice in a year should people be forking out for a pot luck, and not every week!. How can this silly idea sustain a good working atmosphere especially if it is financially draining on the employees? And who is profiting the most from this? There are other ways to create a positive team environment and this is NOT one of them! When you mentioned that someone has falsified records then this is a big indication to me that things are ALREADY out of control. Do try to get a Manager to put things under control! Phone head office and ask if this is the policy for branches to be doing pot lucks every week? Ask someone who can make a difference for you! Or write an anonymous letter of complaint if you have to and send it to the CEO!
