In Reply To: A friend of mine is a junior person in a bank branch. Every week a combination of higher-ups/coworkers try to rally sales by expecting employees to bring in food for their co-workers (10+) people. This seems to me unfair, bordering on ridiculous. I've heard of pot lucks once or maybe twice a year (I don't work in banking), but every week? It seems like an unreasonable financial demand on employees and an unreasonable demand on their off-hours to do this every week. If one doesn't participate they look like they aren't a team player. The branch doesn't really have a manager and at least one of the other employees has changed customer's paperwork (falsified) to increase their own sales levels. These pot lucks are all about "team" and "sales" but I would think the company should be maybe buying people lunch if they want to reinforce teamwork every week. Why doesn't management buy a pizza once in a while? What can be done about this? Is it a big mistake to just say no, I won't participate? Any and all suggestions welcome. Thank you!
Message: If the company pays for all food its great. But when its employees paying for everybody, it depends. And that is that it depends on whether the employees can afford it. Offices tend to forget that some employees cannot afford to pay even this rare amt for a lot of coworkers. We used to do similar at my workplace until I told my manager that it was not cost effective and I refused to do anything except doughnuts. Cost difference for me was $8 for few boxs of doughnuts versus $150 for real food. I told her that if I was to buy food, that I would need a major raise. I did get a big raise later but that was not related to this request.
