In Reply To: I lost my job in January 2004. Since I anticipated a layoff, I interviewed for a job in February 2003, and then accepted the position in March 2003. The job required clearance, so it took almost a year, so I was laid off and formally accepted the job. My husband and I moved back to where we wanted to live, but I took a $15K paycut. (Believe me, I interviewed for other positions, but was not extended any offers.) Well, a month into the job, and I hate it. When I write that down, I feel immature, if ungrateful because I lost my job and should be happy I even have one. My current job not only represents a tremendous loss of pay; I also feel that, professionally, it is several steps down. Is it it unethical to even try to apply for a new job? The sticky part is that I would have to pay back my relocation expenses.
Message: I had nearly the same experience. My advise is to quit or plan on quitting as soon as possible. Actively search for another job and in the meantime until you get one find a really fantastic hobby to think about while you are in that job. You are not doing yourself or the company any favor by staying there. You will not be interested in performing to your best ability and may soon suffer physical problems that you would not normally have if you were in a job you really wanted. It is not unethical to apply for a new job. Pay back the relocation expenses and be happy you are out of there.
