Need advice...I ratted out my boss |

I am in a very strange predicament. I work in an office where virtually everyone is complaining about the dishonest, favoritist practices of our boss. His dishonesty and favoritism toward one particular employee was affecting everyone's pocketbook in one way or another. There were a myriad things that he was doing illegally. To be honest, I could continue doing my job without getting overly negative, but I think it was severely affecting everyone else's focus. I decided to report him, first of all because it was unfair to all of us, and secondly because some employees might have been fired unfairly or quit because of the negative feelings they had. Everyone thinks that an employee who recently quit spilled the beans. No one thinks that I did it, including the boss. In fact, the boss really likes me, and spoke to me in his office about being ratted out, and how the employee that recently quit is evil and scum. The problem with all of this is that I actually like the boss as a person, and so does everyone else. I don't want him to get fired, even though there is a possibility this could happen, once the company investigation is complete. I feel so guilty and weird now at work, even though our company strongly encourages reporting misconduct, and actively promotes use of its hotline. Can anyone please offer some insight into this matter? Do you think what I did was wrong or stupid? Or do you think it was the right thing to do? How would you deal with the feelings I'm going through? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! :)
