In Reply To: I don't see how women are discriminated against "in the workplace". Sure, you can find examples of it - but, if anything, the norm is quite the opposite. Firms fall over themselves to find excuses to promote women. And by the way, men and women are paid practically the same for the same jobs and experience levels, all things considered. econ
Message: While work discrimination against women ( and minorities) do exist in the workplace, I believe that far too many times that that women use discrimination as an excuse rather than trying to understand where they are lacking and trying to improve. Much of the statistics about salary differences between women and men are skewed. Even with the same set of skills and education, we are forgetting that many women take an average of 6 months - 1 year off/child at the prime of their careers for maternity leave. They also take time off to spend time with their kids. Nowadays women are not penalized for that but just the fact that they are taking so much time off will negatively impact the progress of their careers. Being a minority myself, I have witnessed discrimination of varying levels in the work place, but I think the best way of dealing with that is for women and minorities to work as hard as they can to improve and be in a position where they become so valuable to a company that they can?t afford to be discriminatory.
