...nor well versed in your specific situation, however - not being allowed to wear 'braid's to work send off red flags to me.
I know that employers can prohihibit 'unprofressional' hair styles, such as facial hair, long hair for men, dyed hair, etc - but it is my 'uneducated' understanding that braided hair aming african americans is a natural and tradidtional thing - so you might want to explore this issue further - as far as the previous poster who suggested you were trying to turn hair styles into a racial issue - i would just ignore it.
But h/she does have a good point in that in realtity - one might want to consider some sort of conformity in the work places when it comes to clothing. For instancem, I would love to wear sandals and no hose to work...it is legal? Yes, Can I d it..Yes, SHOULD I?...NO - its not exactly a good career decision - especially for women who in my opinion should always try to be as professional as possible, - which means...mainstream and conservative. But the hairstyle thing...depends obviously on the types of braids. I have seen very professional, conservative and stylish braided hair as well as more funky, fashioble styles - which is not an issue of race - but of professionalism.
hope this helps

thanks everyone for you opinions and advice. aside from the braids issue - or maybe deeper down in it - i'm concerned about my image as a "minority professional" rather than simply as a "professional." do you know what i mean? i worry that by looking "too ethnic," i risk building up my career and finding mainstream success. i hate that i'm saying this, but it's true. =gladyss
