In reading the previous 13 emails or so, I felt compelled to give my input on this subject. I am a feminist who has studied the "original" female philosophers including Harriet Taylor Mill, Shulamith Firestone, Mary Wollstonecraft, etc. As a professional, I have challenged my feminist and liberal beliefs and have tried to see all sides of the coin regarding women vs. men in the workplace.
It is a fact of life today that there is discrimination in the workplace, be it sexual, racial or ethnic. Transcend this. Work hard and achieve your goals as you set them. Don't allow finger pointing and blaming to get in the way of your success. If you are so consumed with the reasons why you cannot be a "philosopher-king" (to use Socratic ideals), then you will not enable yourself to become one. At the end of the day, the intrinsic reward for your hard work and perseverance should mean more to you than a spreadsheet detailing how you rank with men within your company. Keep working hard and you will achieve. And--if your company truly devalues your input due to your sex, then move on. Which is worse: the company devaluing you or you allowing it to continue by remaining an employee of that company. Chose the things you have influence over. Make changes accordingly. |

I don't see how women are discriminated against "in the workplace". Sure, you can find examples of it - but, if anything, the norm is quite the opposite. Firms fall over themselves to find excuses to promote women.
And by the way, men and women are paid practically the same for the same jobs and experience levels, all things considered.
