I was hired last year by Wachovia??s Commercial Real Estate Services unit under their real estate capital markets Investment Banking division. They are primarily the Master Servicer for IB deals (bonds) that come to market. I am not sure if this side of the business is for me. I got in as an analyst. The pay is good. Does anyone know what the impression of this unit is by the rest of IB at Wachovia? Since I am in the right division (IB at Wachovia) can I utilize this experience, my prior work experience and my graduate degree to get into the M&A unit or over to the origination side of the business? Will it be difficult to move into what I feel is the right area for me in Ibanking now that I am in Wachovia's Ibanking division? Good feedback is appreciated. |

I'm not sure what your chances are, since essentially all you are doing in servicing CMBS loans, and are not involved in the type of analysis performed by typical (real) investment bankers, such as M&A analysis, LBO analysis, IPOS, etc.
If you are lucky, you might be able to parlay your lending experience in the CMBS market into a job in Real Estate investment banking. Wachovia has a group in NY and a group in Richmond. Good luck.
