In Reply To: The deal sourcing work that Associates at TA & Summit do involves a great deal of cold calling. They each have built up a large, proprietary database of private companies in spaces they find appealing. The associates then call these companies periodically to see how the buisness is doing and attempt to build a relationship so that when the company is of a significant size and the founders want to either increase the growth rate or take some chips off the table TA or Summit are primed to step in and facilitate the transaction. Having an existing network would definitely help you as you attempted to source new transactions and generate leads that aren't in their existing database. (Note: I haven't worked at either but know some folks who came out of both. An associate role there is viewed as a great stepping stone to roles at other firms.) - C
Message: To be clear, "Associates" refer to entry level professionals (say, 0-4 years work experience). "Dialing for dollars" is the largest part of their job description, as the previous poster describes. This is fairly common in the VC industry... New MBA hires have a wider range of responsibilities.
