In Reply To: I have been working as an equities' analyst in a top-tier, global funds management firm for 2 years. Does this qualify as the type of business experience essential for VC? Also, where can VC lead? What career paths typically follow? Further, (I apologise for the myriad of questions), what sort of life style can a VC analyst expect? Are the hours ludicrously long? Do top-tier firms offer training, or are people generally expected to learn "on the job"? Is there likely to be opportunities to travel at the analyst level?
Message: I think your experience is good. There are no specific criteria for a vc type positions. Many VC associates/partners are either past entrepreneurs, investment bankers,or even professional service providers (lawyers, accountants, etc.) As far as what happens after the VC world, there are several options open - entrepreneurship, starting your own VC firm, or investment banking, although I have never seen one leave VC for investment banking - its always been the other way around. The lifestyle for a VC depends on the position (partner versus principal versus associate versus analyst), as well as on the size of the VC firm. VCs usually start with long hours ad currently, their days are filled with multipole responsiblities - raising capital for portfolio companies, managing startups, etc.
