To be honest, I really doubt it matters, because there are so many other issues from getting from ibanking to VC other than just what group you worked for.
However, I think that M&A, tech banking, and equity underwriting is probably the most attractive because it has some relation to what VCs do. |

Let's assume for the sake of this question that choosing one of these two career paths will guarantee a position as partner down the road. Which -- from your observation of predecessors -- is the faster route,
1) Work as an associate for a firm after having done either banking or consulting, then jumping into a portfolio company
or
2) Try your hand at industry and entrepreneurship for several years
