I'm transfering to Stern (undergrad) next year. I want to eventually go into PE/VC. Should I major in finance/accounting and take a job with a BB I-bank (i want to do PIA/REPIA) or switch to c.a.s. and be some kind of engineering major even though i'm not interested in that type of work in the least. BTW-- is Stern considered a prestigous choice for an undergrad b-school??? How favorably is it looked upon in the business world? Thanks |

when i was looking for positions in vc around 98 to 99 i was told that unless i had an engineering degree or had previously run a tech company, i was out of luck. but i think you will see quite a change in the future. it seems like super sexy technology vc is beginning regress back to its wall street roots, so the demand for people who spend their waking hours writing atomic equations on their MIT notepads with their star trek memorobilia pens is decreasing, and those that seem now to be in demand are individuals with a strong understanding acc/fin, also, for LBO's a speciality really helps, like having a knack for understanding operational improvements and say leveraged finance (tax shields etc). I'm not sure how much that helps, but good luck!
