Banking experience is not a necessity for a VC. Many backgrounds can work.
As someone else said on this board VC is often something you back into more than apply for. The text book case of a founder/top executive form a top startup that is now a multi-billion dollar public company that has invited to join a VC firm (or start his own fund) is real. Nevertheless there are less glamorous ways to get into VC, from time to time a firm needs a new associate. These are hired many ways usually by word of mouth or via a head-hunter. In the later case many Investment Banker types with some hands on company building experience could be in the running. The real problem is there are not a lot of VC openings in relation to the number of eager candidates (many outfits are only 5 to 15 people). There are many types of VC firms and programs one cannot generalize. Another way route is to migrate over from a less hot part of the Private Equity sector. Overall you need to be bring a lot to the table at whatever level you join.

Naive question perhaps... but what kind of work would an associate be doing at a VC firm?
Industry analysis?
Financial modeling?
