Message: I was wondering if someone could offer some career advice and guidance about moving into Private Equity. I have been working for 3 years. For the first year and a half I worked at an IT consulting firm implementing CRM systems and was certified in Siebel, Clarify and Banner. I was liberal arts major at Duke, but was rated one of the top IT consultants at the engineering heavy company. I acquired a very thorough understanding of technology, databases, programming, and CRM systems. The past year and a half I have been working for an online marketing company in the Bay Area. While at this company, I was tagged to help start a new division where I was responsible for managing 6 people, P & L, developing the business plan, pricing, and generating revenue. After seven months managing this group, I was moved to a fully sales focused position as the company needed to drive revenue and I had success closing deals for my group. I have since been promoted to a regional sales manager, as I became one of the top sales people within the company and have closed deals with over 10 Fortune 500 companies. When I look at my background, I have a very strong understanding of technology, online marketing, sales, and have built new businesses. I do not have the finance background others my age in Private Equity traditionally have, but feel that I could offer perspective and experience, which few others have. How would you recommend that I approach such a move and with my background are there opportunities? What resources are available to network and learn about potential job openings? Any advice that you could give would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks
