In Reply To: I'm starting at a top 5 MBA school in the fall and come from 4 years at a successful technology startup, where I was one of the first employees. What would be the recommended track for coursework and summer internships in order to pursue a career in venture capital? I'm wondering if I should take a strategy consulting route or i-banking route for internships, and I'm also wondering if I should look to a more financially focused courseload vs. something else. Any thoughts? Thanks.
Message: Many top schools have certain specific venture capital tracks and therefore in terms of courseload, I would get a rounded education in both marketing and finance. In some schools (Kellogg in particular), there is even an Entrepreneurship major, where you spend a considerable amount of time studying case studies involving venture capital. As far as internships are concerned, there is no right/wrong solution. Investment banking may provide for you an ability to get a handle on a certain industry (i.e. telecom) and will give you a "crash course" in finance. Management consulting on the other hand will give you experience working in teams and interacting with management teams. As you can see - both are very useful. David Starr
