Is interning at a small shop in NYC really worth it? |

After reading some message boards in the VC area here in vault I've begun to have doubts as to whether it will really be worth my time, energies, knowledge, talents and skills to spend my summer interning for a small shop (100 million fund started in March 2000) based in Midtown Manhattan.
I'm an NYU Stern student who needs one semester (fall 2001 semester) to graduate but I'm a marketing/management major (weak in Finance) who started a small business about 10 years ago but didn't get much operational experience because of a power struggle that ensued. I resigned from the venture, cut my losses and returned to school to finish my education.
Ideally, I would like to be an entrepreneur one day but am thinking VC might be an interesting and challenging field to get into and taste a little of what it's like to be on the other side of the power equation. There also seems to be a better likelihood of making big bucks in VC than starting my own company. Flip side is I would also learn how best to position myself if I want to approach VC's in the future.
Thanks in advance for your feedback, advice and any suggestions.
P.S. - I'm also considering applying to graduate school and earning an MBA (perhaps in Finance or Marketing or Entrepreneurship). |

If you have doubts about the opportunity, go with your "gutt". I suggest going into entrepreneurship before entering venture capital, since as a venture capital professional you will be expected to use your entepreneurial skills to help growing/emerging companies. Currently, if this experience does not exits, I suggest you find it.
