In Reply To: I am also facing similar issue, only I already have a job in a different sector. I'm part of finance team at Cisco's Asian subsidiary. I am in a supposedly special program meant to train college recruits to produce future leaders for this company, in which we are exposed to accounting (9 months) and financial analysis. I expect to gain a lot of international experience as well. The prob is I am rather disapppointed with the work. It's simple, repetitive, slow and i get the feeling I haven't learned anything of much value to this day(5 months). Perhaps because I am in entry level acct'ng and because we are a subsidiary. What i can't decide is whether it would be better for me to leave now or later after the rotation program and MBA. Do you think I would have a better chance of getting into tier 1 VC (or for the matter i-banking/ consulting) if i have such background compared to starting off as an entry level at a small, new VC? And in terms of being accepted to top ten MBA schools would it be better to stay with Cisco or working for a small and rather new VC as an analyst? Also what do people think of Newbridge Capital?
Message: This has been a rather interesting thread -- ranging from rampant "I wanna learn!" to stuff elitism. I've been in the VC business nearly 20 years. My partners and I administer a small fund, and also act as VC partners to outstanding entrepreneurial aspirants. We're not "tier 1" or "tier 2" but neither are we laying off or trimming back. We have more work than we can handle, and are still, in this economy, able to pick and choose our deals. I've had many interns who went on to the larger institutions. They learned the scut, nuts and bolts with me and we all loved it. Does it pay much? Some. I haven't had the applicants this year as in years past but the crop of finance and MBA students has dwindled. If you want to intern, and you're serious, we're interested.
