what about attending schools like UT-Austin that are not top ten but still top 20-25, do you still see those as a waste? |

No, I personally don't see that as a waste at all, especially if you can't get in to the top ten schools. That's about as low as I would personally go, though (as far as ranking's concerned; again, I'm not remarking on the actual curriculum of the schools, just perception and ability to get high-paying jobs afterward). I do believe you will have to work a bit harder to build the network you want/need to accomplish your goals. I have heard the UT-Austin's program is very up-and-coming, and is respected somewhat in finance circles.
Geography also plays into the eqation. If you plan on working on the east coast, you will most likely want to try for an east coast (New England) school. The same can be said for the west.
The dilemma would be if you were accepted into both Wharton and UT-Austin, for example, and were planning on living in Texas (for whatever reason.) Would the benefits of a private Ivy-League top ten school outweigh a top-twenty school with a regional advantage (like Austin or UC Berkeley)? Don't have the answer to that one...
