On the matter of "top10 or nothing" - who are you people? Let me assure you that your school pedigree is not the be all and end all w/ respect to VC/finance success.
I've made a number of contacts with people involved in the above, who manage funds in excess of $500MM, who also haven't graduate degrees.
It's not where you go, it's who you know that's important. And while elaborate networks can be fastened @ bschool, so can they be @ unrelated social functions.

what about attending schools like UT-Austin that are not top ten but still top 20-25, do you still see those as a waste?
