I understand Blackstone to be more of a private equity shop then a VC. I believe thy are heavy into Mezzanine and Real-estate funds. I have not heard much of their VC fund if they have one. With a big diverse firm like that I would be a little more focused on the reputation of the partner and team you might be directly working with.
As a PE shop they have a good reputation.

Blackstone is definitely a top tier firm. As stated in the previous message they are more of a real estate and LBO shop, perhaps a little behind KKR and Carlyle, but definitely in the top bracket. Their reputation in the late 80s and early 90s was very good when they particiapted in some sizable and high-profile transactions.
