In Reply To: Having both tech and business backgrounds is best but business experience is more critical at the end of the day. After all its the "art of the deal?? not the art of the tech. Yes, many VCs will have tech experts on staff but most of the talent is experienced business and financial folk with a combination of backgrounds. VC like securities trading sounds easier than it is and nothing replaces years of direct experience in this field. The final investment decisions are often a gut call, which comes from years of working with companies and transactions. This is intangible is what the VCs are eyeing up.
Message: One avenue is to sign on to a VC firm as a Venture Partner where you are working more closely with portfolio companies post-investment. This allows you to utilize your skills that have greater currency while giving you time to learn the finance and structuring skills important to becoming a good general partner. A different background or skill set doesn't make a difference if you're building strong companies and generating large returns to your limited partners.
