I would like to get the thoughts of those on this VC Board as to whether technology or finance skills are in greater demand by VCs.
I have held executive and management positions for a Fortune 100 technology firm, where I've developed new (growth) business opportunities and vetted emerging technologies. Most of my work has focussed on cutting edge info and communication technologies, where I've networked with VCs and start-ups in those fields. However, I have little formal finance training, and from those VCs I've spoken with it seems that this is a critical skill to have. My sense is that I could bring a good deal of value to VCs who are seeking to manage portfolio companies with problems -- and to build value webs around these companies, but that doesn't seem to be a skill currently 'in demand'. I would appreciate any thoughts others have. |

Having both tech and business backgrounds is best but business experience is more critical at the end of the day. After all its the "art of the deal?? not the art of the tech.
Yes, many VCs will have tech experts on staff but most of the talent is experienced business and financial folk with a combination of backgrounds. VC like securities trading sounds easier than it is and nothing replaces years of direct experience in this field. The final investment decisions are often a gut call, which comes from years of working with companies and transactions. This is intangible is what the VCs are eyeing up.
