In Reply To: I have 20 years in the software business, with last 3 as VP in B2B ECommerce software co. Getting my JD in May, having focused on Corp. Law and Securities, M&A, etc and would like to explore VC. Any suggestions or comments on chances? Thanks
Message: the best way is to talk to the VCs who funded your software company (obviously, they thought you were a decent risk)! if you didn't get any funding, well, try to talk to the VCs who came closest. The other route is to talk to alumni of your law school (or undergrad) who are in the biz. Otherwise, your best route is to work for a tech-focused law practice or go in-house with the right company. Also, get involved as an angel (you may want to join an angel group if you have the money). A good friend of my parents was a VP of marketing at a semi parts maker. He then played around with angel stuff for a year or two. He did quite well and was offered a partnership at an excellent VC firm a year ago. ag
