In Reply To: The PhD is a tough call for me. On one hand, it would be great to be an MBA/PhD...but on the other hand, I would be looking at many years of school. And if I decided to apply for a PhD program it would be for fall of 2006 (deadlines passed for this fall). That being said, I would have about 5-6 years of schooling ahead of me at the age of 24. I've already had a little taste of the working world so far, and I'm not so sure how taking a sabbatical till I'm 30 sounds. I have a greater grasp of science than most due to my pre-med background, and if I get a healthcare focused MBA (Wharton or Fuqua) I think I'll be fine. Maybe I'll consider a master's (regular or part time) in pharmacology.....what are your thoughts being that you decided to stop at the master's level?
Message: Hey aprilia825, To me the important things to think about when considering a graduate degree are 1) What do you want to do in the future? and 2) How will the graduate education/degree help you accomplish your goals? So in your case it seems like you are mostly interested in the business side of biotech/VC, so the issue kind of becomes how well do you need to understand the science which the company you are working for is doing. If you feel like you would benefit from getting a bit more formal training in science I think a Master's would definitely help with that. A PhD however is really geared towards people who want to become university professors or at least want to run their own lab one day. So if you want to be really hands on with the science in the biotech/VC company then this might be a good option, but if you are more interested in the business side of things probably an MBA would be your best bet. If you have any other thoughts on the subject please share.
