In Reply To: How can women make headway in VC? Same as anyone else -- networking, mentoring, etc. Well-known women in VC need to promote the cause. And lesser-known women need to do what they can to help younger women starting out in the biz. As far as the "boys" being willing to make some room: VCs are bloodsuckers. If you have an idea that makes sense (and cents) they'll pay attention. It's just a matter of getting it out there. Networking is one idea. Like other entrepreneurs, though, cold-calling and e-mailing business plans can get a good idea through the door. For an extra added bonus, you might send ideas directly to prominent women VCs.
Message: I think women need to get more proactive in working with each other. Part of the problem is that many women believe that in order to succeed, they must become "less female," whatever that might means. That is, they think they have to separate themselves from other women. Sure, part of me really hates the idea of putting all women into a seperate category. However, it's quite common for people from the same school to try and help each other. I would love to talk to Ann Winblad and other female VCs and hear their strategies for success--and I would guess that Winblad's story might strike a deeper cord with me than that of her partner Bill Hummer, a former basketball player.
