Topic Name: Are VC firms looking for BSEEs?
Message Name: Can I transition to VC from BSEE?
Date Posted: 09/11/2000
Message: I have my BSEE (Electrical Engineering) from a top 20 college but have always found that I enjoy the business side over engineering. Considering that I have 5 years of Large Account Management ($$MM Sales) experience with a cutting edge technology firm, would it make sense for me to approach a VC firm? I currently make about $150K total compensation - assuming that I had a chance with a VC firm, would my compensation be more or less? I'm really not that concerned as I'm still fairly young (27) and figure that any career in VC would be well worth it. If I boiled down my current responsibilities it would look something like this: I can talk to uber-engineers, understand them, influence them, and sell to them. My sales and presentation skills are obviously very strong. My weak point is the finance...but I take night classes (Harvard) to take up the gap.
