Currently I am in the big 4 ( 4 months now) in one of most the respected and selective(within the firm) Financial Service Group. How probable is it for me to transition into VC after 2-3 years later? I also plan to pursue my MBA in 4-5 years (time permitting), or is that a better time for the transition?
I do find consulting rather easy at times, VC would possibly give me opportunities to work with start-ups and I would like nothing more because of the challenge and in effect the reward. |

..as an aspiring entrepreneur I have met several VCs from the Southwest and West Coast. I was trying to raise money for a new venture, not join their firms. I did ask about their business though as I'm new to the process. One prominent VC in my local area said that the industry is very tough to crack into right now because so many funds are folding. Thus there are a lot qualified, experienced folks looking for VC jobs. Indeed one person I was working with was let go from her firm (HBS grad, McKenzie experience, the whole bit)
So, I'd recommend networking as much as you can now while keeping a lid on your expectations. It will probably take awhile before someone will give you a shot. Your ambition is good, but you need to remember that smart finance guys are relatively plentiful. VCs are really looking for people who can judge opportunities and management teams. That tends to come from street experience as opposed to formal schooling. (coming from a good school is a given)
