In Reply To: What is your specialty? Is it medical or surgical in nature? There are some MDs who work with healthcare-focused VCs either as employees or as consultants to portfolio companies. A couple of things to keep in mind: 1.) There are many more VC deals with medical device and diagnostic companies than with pharma/biotech. Therefore, a surgical specialty may have better luck than a primary care physician, etc. 2.) If you know the "pharm industry by virtue of doing studies" then you don't know the pharm industry, esp. from a VC perspective. Typical "pharm company" a VC may invest in focuses on lead generation and optimization and is 2-5 years away from first IND. Clinical studies are WAY in the future. Also, commercial opportunity is more important than understanding study design. 3.) That said, potential employers will want you for both your technology assessment skills as well as your ability to value a product and market. Any valuation, business managment experience, etc. should be emphasized. Good luck! By the way, what cities are you looking in?
Message: I'm a resident surgical physician in NYC, looking to switch career paths and work for a VC firm. Any specific suggestions on which VC firms to contact?
