In Reply To: I can safely say this based on my own experiences and from having worked other places and from speaking to others. There is no place like it. I worked in Maspeth Queens from 1986-1987 and I'm amazed that the company still gets away with treating people as badly as they do. I started as a Management trainee in the Industrial Engineering Department. It was the best starting salary out there, that's how I got sucked in. Management trainee meant in order to satisfy the policy of promoting from within you have to become a scratch driver in 28 days. Fair enough. Other than being given the most dangerous route in the district and was scared out of my wits for 28 days, it had to be done. It was a memorable love-hate experience. However it was downhill from there. First, they should put on the application that you should be an alcoholic, because everyone I saw in upper managegement was one. I went to the "People's Workshop" and the regional managers were getting incoherently tanked at the virtually unlimited alcohol company paid for hospitality room. You should expect to get divorced at least once too. Why, because the company has no respect for family life, days off, hours worked per week, sick time, I could go on and on. It was so bad it was laughable. Every meeting started with a reading from the book of quotes of Jim Casey, a pathetic loser who used to wander into package centers in the middle of the night to get his jollies. I can tell you about days I worked until 2am only to be called in by 8 the next day to deliver a completely unsorted truck in a strange neighborhood. I could tell you about the district manager calling his subordiates stupid assholes at meetings. I called the head of the feeder division a dick and was transferred for it. I never regretted it, he was a dick. I was transferred to a package center where I was told I had to come in at 6:30am and leave at 8:30pm every day. I started coming in at 8:30 am and was called up for it. Basically they told me I'd have to work Saturdays too (unpaid) and when I said that's OK but I'd take Mondays off, I got fired. They wanted me to sign a piece of paper saying I was insubordinate so they wouldn't have to pay my unemployment. I laughed, refused, was escorted out of the building and collected the full 6 months unemployment while I furthered my education to get a real career. I still wear my UPS uniform on halloween.
Message: I couldn't believe it when you wrote how everyone should be an alcoholic..I thought it was just here in Lufkin Tx. If you are an alcoholic, manegment loves you! If you don't party and drink, they hate you. I worked as a preloader and am a single mom. I was told at hiring that if i gave them a year, they would transfer me to Wa for college. A year and a half later, they denied my transfer and tried to fire me after I went to Wa to sign up for college and get a new house. The days off were pre approved 3 months in advance. When i was in Wa, my boss said he didn't give me permission and didn't know anything about the time off. Then he said he never intended on transfering me, even though he hired my replacment 3 months prior. He flat out lied, and got away with it because he has been there 20 yrs and the "good old boy" network covered his sorry butt. Now I am out thousands of dollars, can't go to college, lost the job in Wa, and the promotion I was working towards. And all because I am a women. I was told if I would just sleep with the boss, this would all go away.......
