In Reply To: I personally think taking one month off a year is better than what we've got going on in the states. It would make work so much more productive having 30 days of vacation to look forward to. Plus, once you return from a vacation, you'd feel so much more relaxed. Stress level would go down tremendously. You'd feel refreshed and ready get back into the swing of things. One week - and even two week - vacations go by too quickly. Next thing you know, you're back in the office and hating it. The only bad thing about the European deal is that everyone takes the SAME month off. If you spread that out through the year, it would work out fine.
Message: Many manufacturing companies in Europe still operate to an official 'shutdown' policy for 2 or 3 weeks in July/August, particularly if they are auto industry. Therefore, employees have no alternative but to take this time off as vacation. However, a lot of employers are not in that industry sector, so employees can take vacation as they wish. Most companies do not want employees to take more than 2 weeks at one time due to loss of production time, but imagine the luxury from the viewpoint of a US worker of being able to have 2 x 2 week vacations plus another 1 week at any time of the year you wish (in agreement with manager, of course)! That doesn't of course count additional statutory holidays, in which Europe abounds! It's about time that the US thinks about catching up with Europe in terms of vacation policies - the minimal amount of time that people accrue over here is positively barbaric!
