I personally think taking one month off a year is better than what we've got going on in the states. It would make work so much more productive having 30 days of vacation to look forward to. Plus, once you return from a vacation, you'd feel so much more relaxed. Stress level would go down tremendously. You'd feel refreshed and ready get back into the swing of things. One week - and even two week - vacations go by too quickly. Next thing you know, you're back in the office and hating it.
The only bad thing about the European deal is that everyone takes the SAME month off. If you spread that out through the year, it would work out fine. |

Even for new hires, the typical non-profit company offers very generous vacation benefits.
The downside, of course, is that these companies pay the least (I used to be a social worker, and there was NO WAY one could support a family on my salary in that job).
At present, I'm working for an HMO, another Non-Profit, where the salaries are a little better, but still meager. Again, I've worked here four years, and get a whole month vacation (they start new hires with 2 weeks, then bump you up to 3 weeks after 2 years. Once you get an "exempt" position, you get 4 weeks).
I doubt if any of your readers would want to trade places, though!
