Topic Name: How well do industry research firms like Gartner pay?
Message Name: analysts make the bucks

In Reply To: I'm currently a Manager in the data warehousing practice of a mid tier consulting firm. I have a BS in Economics, six years of experience (varied consulting) and earn a little over 100k/year. I've always been interested in industry research and am curious about the opportunities and compensation levels offered by firms like Gartner, Meta, and Giga. Any thoughts?
Message: I interviewed with Giga and Gartner... albeit not as an Analyst (those are the research positions), it was in Consulting with Gartner and the position was similar with Giga but I cannot remember the specific title... I also have friends that did time at Gartner. The analysts can be paid quite well ($125K+) and the research directors can make close to $200K possibly more... it really is quite variable though, depending on depth of experience and whether or not the area in which you want to do research is hot or not... a lot of factors can go into salary. Six years of experience would make you very light on experience compared to most of the analysts, most of them have 10+ yrs in the industry if not more. I am not yet 30 and I would have been among the very youngest people in consulting at Gartner... and consulting does not require the depth of experience that being an analyst does. I liked both firms a lot based upon the interviews... I had to turn down Gartner becuase I could not relocate at the time (I accepted an appointment to teach a class at a university for the semester and could not leave) and I withdrew from the process with Giga because I found a gig with a start-up was about to go public and it would not interfere with the class I was teaching. I will keep these two firms on my radar for the future.
